Missa Sancti Juniperi Serra

chorus and the instruments of the California missions; Extraordinary Form, 2022

Commissioned by Archbishop Cordileone in 2021, as statues of the saint were being toppled across California, and given by Terry Caster of San Diego in memory of his wife Barbara, for whom all who sing the Mass are asked to pray. It sets the Traditional Latin rite as Serra himself prayed it, uses the simple instruments the Franciscan friars had in the missions, and weaves in Serra's favorite Marian hymn, the Salve Virgen Pura. First celebrated on the saint's feast, July 1, 2022, at Mission Dolores Basilica, on the site where the first Mass in San Francisco was offered in 1776, with the Archbishop presiding and Richard Sparks conducting, as the closing Mass of the Sacra Liturgia San Francisco conference; EWTN recorded it and featured the Mass in its documentary on Serra as one of America's founders. To be celebrated again at Mission Dolores on October 10, 2026, for the 250th anniversary of the mission's founding.
